The Philippines has been a developing player in the medical travel industry. With its world-class facilities and highly trained health professionals, the country is quickly gaining competitive edge in medical tourism. The government has formed a task force headed by the Department of Tourism, Department of Health and the Department of Trade to set forth the Philippine Medical Tourism Program.
Doctors and nurses in the Philippines have studied under curricula modeled from that of the United States and that are more challenging than many of those in Southeast Asia. Many Filipino doctors also acquired their fellowship or post-graduate studies from well-known institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as from other developed countries.
Hospitals and other medical and wellness centers in the country comply with ISO standards and are regularly accredited by the Department of Health and other governing bodies. Some have already obtained or are applying for accreditation by the US-based Joint Commission International and the UK-sourced Trent Accreditation scheme.
